1897  There are two species of caribou in the country. One--the ordinary kind--is found in most parts of the north. This much resembles and is generally spoken of as the reindeer. The other is known as the "Wood caribou," being a much larger and more beautiful animal.
1956  It was a woods caribou, standing in midstream and nibbling at some grass that sprouted in the water.
